Techdirt anti-SOPA ad competition

-- written January 23, 2011

Dear Techdirt, Thank you so much for the constant pressure that you've put on all of SOPA's cosponsors over these last few months, and a hearty congratulations to you and the rest of the techdirt community for finally getting Marsha Blackburn— the worst cosponsor of all— to pull her support for this horrid bill. Getting one of the most corrupt politicians in Congress to backtrack on SOPA while she sits in the single most gerrymandered Republican stronghold in the entire country is truly an incredible accomplishment. Every one of you who helped us succeed in making Blackburn's support for SOPA a real issue in Tennessee's 7th District should be extremely proud of the part that you played in this fight. Without any question at all, this represents a huge victory for internet users and First Amendment defenders everywhere, and the importance of what you've done cannot be overstated.

While today is an absolutely wonderful day for the people of Tennessee's 7th House District, the concern that Blackburn will simply renew her support for another internet-destroying bill once the heat comes off of SOPA is a real one. As many of your readers have already pointed out, the number of weasel words in Blackburn's newest statement is extremely troubling. Thus, in order to prevent her from being able to pull off another bait and switch on internet freedom, Jack is reaching out to the internet community once again to help keep the pressure on Blackburn throughout the rest of this election cycle. So with that, Jack's campaign is formally announcing a public YouTube competition. The only rules are as follows:

  1. Post a 30-60 second clip on YouTube that integrates concise but effective anti-SOPA arguments>
  2. Include an exposition of Marsha Blackburn's extraordinary hypocrisy regarding the issue of internet regulation
  3. Conclude the video with "I'm a supporter of Jack Arnold and the internet, and I support this message."
Bonus points will be awarded for incorporating a shout out to reddit.com, to techdirt.com, and to Erick Erickson's non-partisan anti-SOPA call to arms. Also, we encourage you to send your video to Jack's campaign directly at daniel.a.horwitz@jackarnoldfortennessee.org. The video with the most hits by the time that SOPA is officially declared dead will be the winner, and it will be prominently featured in Jack's campaign between now and election day.
